Multi Million Dollar Renovation Completed
December 15, 2011: HPI has completed the renovation of the former Hallmark Plaza Apartments at 1797 Wilart Drive Louisville KY.
Hallmark Plaza was built in the early seventies as 100 one bedroom units of public housing. The building has been renamed Wilart Arms Apartments and the 4-story building is now 66 one, two and three bedroom units. This reduction in the number of apartments has allowed HPI to expand the availability of affordable housing to larger families.
According to Mike Hynes, President of HPI, “when we took over management of the building, gangs would not give us access to the 4th floor. There were elderly and disabled people trapped in that environment. It was very important that HPI take on Wilart Arms to preserve the housing and protect the residents and the neighborhood. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home.”
The building renovation included a new roof, electrical and plumbing systems, paint, carpet and energy efficient windows and appliances. Additional parking was added to the front and the rear courtyard got a new playground with privacy fencing. This was all made possible through low income housing tax credits and stimulus dollars provided through the Tax Credit Assistance Program.
Families and individuals living at Wilart Arms must meet guidelines that include income of less than 60% of median income. For 2011 the median income in the Louisville area was set at $37,740 for a family of four.
